California traffic stop escalates to violence

This compilation of bodycam and bystander footage comes from San Diego County, California. On 18 February, 2026, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a Hyundai Elantra which appeared to have been stolen. As other units arrived to assist with the investigation, the passenger refused to comply with further commands and rolled up the window whilst grabbing a handgun. The deputies removed the driver from the vehicle, but the suspect began to raise the weapon. Although TASERS were used to stop him, they proved ineffective. This gave the suspect, identified as Andre Mendez, 33 years of age, time to fire twice before being struck by gunfire from six officers. Although aid was rendered on-scene, Mendez did not survive.
