Welfare check goes tragically awry

This bodycam footage comes from Reno, Nevada. Local police received several calls expressing concern for a man who seemed likely to jump off a bridge. Although the officers tried to the best of their ability to redirect and de-escalate the suspect, he eventually rushed one of the officers and tried to flail them with a chain, resulting in his being shot. Furthermore, an officer was hit with friendly fire. Although medical aid was provided to both, the suspect was declared dead on-scene. Viewer discretion is advised. The suspect, identified as Michael Johnson, 27 years of age, was known to law enforcement due to previous contact. Recalling that Johnson had a knife at one point in the past, the officers assumed he still had it, which is the point at which negotiations stalled out. Unable to be certain if he had his hands on a knife in his pocket, the police announced they were going to go hands on and circled him, in order to prevent him from drawing it. This threat somewhat unsurprisingly caused Johnson to escalate, swinging a heavy tow chain at one of the officers. Note: there are six officers present, and apparently none of them thought that neuromuscular incapacitation- that is, a TASER- might be a good option for keeping a suspect from pulling a knife. Can't draw if you can't move. Instead, presumably feeling emboldened by numbers, they ignored the tools at their disposal and gave him time to produce a weapon. When he flailed it overhead, multiple officers fired, striking him and one of their own. Considering the whole encounter began to prevent a possible suicide, the incident seems like a waste that could have been handled better.
