Russian cornered in trench by assault team
GoPro footage released by Ukrainian sources conducting combat operations in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine captures an assault through a Russian trench position. The pair of attacking Ukrainians end up cornering a Russian Soldier towards the back of the trench, and manage to overpower him with a superior volume of small arms fire. According to a loose translation of the conversation the two Ukrainian are having towards the end of the video, it becomes unclear if the Russian was killed or simply wounded in the attack. One of the Ukrainians asks why his face is covered, to which the other Ukrainian replies that he wants to make sure the Russian can't see them, indicating that the Russian may still be alive.

This Ukrainian GoPro-style footage captures the moment two soldiers' lives are changed forever. As the cameraman and his buddy run toward an unspecified location or objective, the lead man trips and falls, laughing. As any warfighter or first responder can tell you, even in spite of ongoing trauma, humor still exists. It's one of the most prevalent coping measures we have for dealing with the horrors. However, the horror comes knocking a few seconds later. The soldier's fall allows the cameraman to overtake him, and just a few feet ahead, the cameraman steps on a mine, which explodes. Perhaps not in the moment, but at some point, the soldier who fell is going to have to face some awful questions and uncertainties. What if he hadn't fallen? Would it be him who tripped the mine? Would they have both skirted it as they ran side by side? It is not immediately certain whether the cameraman survived, but even on the seemingly slim chance, it's safe to say neither will be the same again. Both war and survivor's guilt are terrible things, and they actively make each other worse.

Ukrainian infantry assault Russian positions on Russian soil in Kursk. The camera operator/rifleman engages Russian soldiers through the trees, aided by his suppressed rifle equipped with thermal optics. The optic appears well zeroed as the shooter fires between tree trunks and brush and manages to drop several enemy targets. One brief clip shows the shooter conducting a dead check of a fallen Russian soldier. The enemy KIA are then checked for intelligence. The Ukrainian unit then clears some enemy-held structures and searches enemy soldiers and equipment destroyed by heavy weapons. The attack then continues, supported by thermal-quipped drones. We see Ukrainian troops emplacing mines and are treated to drone shots of them clearing Russian positions.

Drone footage released by Ukrainian sources captures a lost Russian Soldier approaching Ukrainian defensive positions thinking that they are his own. It appears as if the Ukrainian positions also weren't sure if the man was friend or foe, and they let him get into shouting distance before ending his life. What you're looking at in this video is a pretty classic IFF failure on both sides. For the uninitiated, IFF is the acronym for Identification: Friend or Foe. Generally speaking, most professional militaries have IFF systems like Near/Far recognition that are designed to prevent fratricide, and to keep enemy forces outside of friendly lines. In this instance, the confused Russian walked right up on Ukrainian positions, believing that they might be his own defensive lines. This probably took the Ukrainian off-guard, who were likely shouting some kind of challenge/pass system towards the Russian before they ultimately took his life with small arms fire.

Drone footage released by Ukrainian sources shows a pair of Russian Soldiers purposely wounding one another. It is presumed that this was being done so that the two Soldiers could avoid further front-line combat duties. This is not an uncommon tactic for troops in a brutal war, especially when you are dealing with conscripts who did not volunteer to fight. A gunshot wound from your buddy looks a lot better then having your face ripped off by fragmentation from an artillery round.

In a brutal video titled "FPV Meat Grinder" a pair of Russian infantrymen are caught in the open by Ukrainian loitering munitions. One of the soldier covers his buddy by engaging the drone with his rifle. He is unsuccessful in hitting it, and instead, it makes a direct hit on his face, killing him instantly upon exploding. The second Russian seeks shelter in a roofless destroyed dwelling. He covers himself in a mylar space blanket in hopes the drone is using a thermal imager. However, the drone is using a color camera, and the bright gold blanket is very easy for the pilot to see. Two FPVs are used to engage the man and his fate is the same as his buddy's.

The aftermath of a Russian probing attack, which worked out poorly for the probers. The description by the Ukrainian source is interesting, as they describe the Russians attempting infiltration tactics with small units seeking weak spots in Ukrainian lines. The source describes small groups of infantry using “reconnaissance by fire,” an “outdated approach” inherited from the Soviets. My understanding of recon by fire is employing fires against likely enemy positions to confirm enemy presence and to determine disposition and weapons. It might be that the Russians are engaged in this practice in order to encourage return fire from Ukrainian heavy weapons or vehicles, thus revealing those positions. It is more likely that they are engaged in similar practices to those employed in Bakhmut. In that battle, less capable units, often consisting of convicts, were pushed forward to draw fire from Ukrainian heavy weapons, thus revealing their locations, and to deplete their ammunition stocks. This was a tactic employed by the Soviets in World War II and was costly for those involved. The Russians are committed to maintaining pressure and to soaking up Ukrainian resources with Russian conscripts mounted in commercial ATVs and Cold War relics

Reconnaissance drone footage released by Ukrainian sources captures the moment a trio of Russian Soldiers find themselves trapped in a combined arms conundrum. According to the source of the footage, the three troops were retreating through a trench line after a failed assault when Ukrainian grenadiers started bombarding their position with rifle grenades. Unable to escape their current position due to the bracketing of accurate grenade fire from adjacent Ukrainian troops, the trio find themselves stuck and exposed to FPV drone attacks they can do literally nothing about. This is a classic combined arms conundrum. Using one weapon system to lock your opponent in place, creating an opening for another weapon system to swoop in and destroy them. We've seen a lot of this from the western trained Ukrainian side of the conflict, and the Russian troops have mostly failed to adapt for the duration of the war.

Reconnaissance and FPV drone footage released by the Russian 177th Armored Brigade shows a fiber optic drone attack against a pair of Ukrainian Soldiers manning a fighting position. The pair of Ukrainian Soldiers appears to be caught entirely off guard by the drone, and in the final moments before impact they can be seen engaging the drone with their service rifles. From this footage alone, it's impossible to tell if the troops were killed in the attack. At the very least, they were likely seriously wounded due to the drone's proximity to them when we see it detonate on the reconnaissance drone view of the attack. The attack was recorded in the Kursk region of Russia.

Footage of drone operators of Ukraine’s 110th Brigade eliminating Russian troops. The soldiers carry a wounded comrade into a culvert or an underpass beneath a road. One soldier is caught behind his teammates and struck by an FPV drone. He staggers, wounded, sinks to his knees and is struck again. One of the wounded soldier’s erstwhile companions stands at the culvert entrance, watching him die. A second FPV drone enters the culvert from the opposite side and inflicts more damage on the Russian team. This episode illustrates how drones have altered battlefield geometry for infantry soldiers. Features which might have previously offered defilade now provide a new place to die.

GoPro footage circulating on social media today allegedly shows a Ukrainian and Russian Soldier getting into a close-range fight with one another. The fight starts off as a gun-fight, with one Soldier ambushing the other from inside of a building as he enters a compound. It quickly escalates to an on-the-ground knife fight as the Soldier attempts to make entry into the building at the same time as the other guy is coming out. In all of my years of archiving combat footage, I have never seen combat like this recorded and released for public consumption.

Footage reportedly out of Kursk, Russia, shows several vehicles belonging to Russian forces, advancing toward Ukrainian lines but meeting heavy resistance. The Ukrainian paratroopers knock out the vehicles with drones, mines, and anti tank projectiles and then clean up the dismounting enemy troops with FPVs and drone dropped grenades. The Russians will likely, at some point, dislodge the Ukrainian foothold from Kursk, but the price they have paid so far is already astronomical.

This footage is a compilation of artillery, observation drone and close-in helmet cam video, showing Ukrainian Special Operations elements on-mission in Kursk. Santa Claus appears to be present at the artillery base; possibly due to the global pivot away from coal, he seems to be invested in delivering lead and HE to the undeserving. Viewer discretion is advised. After softening the target with artillery fire, the Ukrainians move in to engage the mixed Russian/North Korean force with small arms and grenades. Although pixelated, the results are still somewhat graphic.
