Footage released by the new Syrian Government shows an attack against a critical checkpoint on the outskirts and entry point to Deir Hafer, which is a town in the eastern countryside of the Aleppo Governorate of Syria, approximately 50 km east of Aleppo city. The checkpoint lies near strategic routes connecting Aleppo to Raqqa and other northeastern areas under SDF control, making it a critical point of control for SDF troops in the region.

In the initial few seconds it is clear that they are not concerned with flagging each other or muzzle discipline. By September 2017, the conflict had been raging since 2011 and the prodemocracy groups and army defectors which had initially opposed the regime had been usurped by a mishmash of extremists factions. Some groups, such as HTS, were offshoots of Al Qaeda. The Syrian Army, on the other hand, was quite exhausted by this point and relied heavily on support from Russia and Iran.

According to the source, this footage recorded somewhere near the Syria border, but no further context was released with the footage. This video was recorded in 2017, and is seeing widespread circulation today. On Twitter, and a few other social media platforms, this is being passed off as recently recorded footage related to the on-going conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli Defense Force. In reality, this was recorded during the peak of the Syrian Civil War in 2017, and is some of the earlier drone footage from that conflict. It's easy to see drone related footage and think that it was recorded in the post Russo-Ukraine War, but the reality is that drones have been fielded on the battlefield as far back as 2012 and 2013 when the United States first started fielding the Switchblade systems in Afghanistan.

A man is shown lying in the street at the 0:48 mark, though context as to his condition and affiliation is unclear.

Clips of training exercises as the interim Syrian government attempts to forge a motley crew of tribal factions, extremist groups, and raw recruits into a national army. The footage highlights the poor state of Syrian defense infrastructure as Cold War-era Soviet relics trundle about while men in mismatched uniforms look on. The Syrian Civil War which began more than a decade ago devolved into an existential struggle to the death between Assad’s regime and an assortment of revolutionary and extremist groups. After clinging doggedly to power for years, the regime suddenly collapsed, leaving men and groups formerly considered terrorists in command of a fractured state. The recent violence in and around Suwayda is indicative of Syrian’s fragile condition. When violence broke out between the local Druze and Bedouin tribes, the government sought to intervene, not with national troops but with a collection of tribes and extremist groups which represent the interim government. The effort quickly devolved into sectarian bloodletting, incurring the wrath of Syria’s southern neighbor, Israel. The need for a military that can act in the interests of the state, free of sectarian influences, is clear, but the path towards achieving such a goal is uncertain.

The truck backs into position, to allow the maximum amount of traverse for the gun, which appears to be a ZU-23-2. This is a widely-exported, Soviet era anti-aircraft platform, featuring twin-mounted 23-millimeter autocannons. While it's often seen in truck-mounted technical configuration, the armored turret upgrade is somewhat more rare.

Members of a Syrian Islamist militia in the vicinity of the Druze enclave of Suwayda flee an Israeli airstrike. The source observes that the militia is Sunni, affiliated with the Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. The source also purports that these militias have perpetrated heinous crimes against the Druze, including setting an elderly Druze man on fire and flinging men off rooftops. Observes maintain that these militias operate with the support of the new Syrian regime, and Druze leaders have labeled the violence as ethnic cleansing. Within the past few hours, reports of a ceasefire resulted in an uneasy quite descending over the city of Suwayda, though looting and burning continues in the surrounding villages. The regime announced the ceasefire after meetings in Jordan between the Syrian foreign minister, the Jordan deputy prime minister, and an American envoy. An Israeli ultimatum to Syria to forces to withdraw from the region or face full Israeli military intervention doubtless factored into the cease fire negotiations. It was reported that government-backed Islamist militias, like the one shown, rejected the ceasefire and attempted to advance into Suwayda against Druze resistance, until the Syrian government threatened to cut supplies of ammunition and fuel. Though the militias eventually halted their advance, stories of atrocities continue to emerge, and the smaller hamlets surrounding the city of Suwayda continue to burn.
