Wounded cop wins Close-Range gunfight in California
Although dated 2023, this bodycam footage coming from Victorville, California, stands out as it records an intense, close range exchange of fire between an officer and suspect. Because the suspect is killed mere feet from the officer, viewer discretion is advised. The officer is shown responding to a call from the suspect's then-girlfriend. She reported that the suspect, Jorge Cardenas (27 years of age) had threatened her with a firearm, at which point she hid in the bathroom. In the video, we see a sheriff's deputy park his car behind Cardenas and attempt to detain him, at which point the suspect enters the store and draws his pistol upon crossing the threshold. The gunfight is on at that point, with both parties exchanging several rounds. The deputy is hit, taking rounds in the legs and the taser on his belt. At the 0:16 mark, he grabs cover and very calmly reports that he's been hit, and quickly reloads. Both of these tasks are difficult to do under the effects of adrenaline, but he manages the reload just in time as Cardenas exits the store to finish the fight. At the risk of armchair-quarterbacking, it's somewhat surprising that Cardenas didn't just put more rounds through the glass. In any event, as the suspect nears him, the officer dumps several rounds into Cardenas, who falls down. In the heat of the moment, the cop accidentally ejects his magazine- which would have cost him his life had Cardenas not gone down. The cop then reloads again and confirms the suspect is no longer a threat. We see Cardenas in what are effectively his death throes as bystanders are heard calling for and checking on one another. Backup arrives at the 01:45 mark. The deputy maintains his composure and reports that he's been hit. Backup arrests Cardenas and takes his pistol for safekeeping as other officers arrive to provide aid. The officer's wounds were non-life threatening, and Cardenas was pronounced dead on-scene.

This law enforcement bodycam and dashcam footage coming from Austin, Texas shows an officer in an encounter with a suspect who appears to be armed with a handgun. This situation is complicated, both tactically and ethically, by the fact that the fact that the suspect is in a wheelchair. Viewer discretion is advised. Responding to 911 calls regarding a wheelchair-bound man spotted in the roadway with a handgun, and further that he had pointed it at passers-by, Austin Police Department officers made contact with one Danny Palomino. Palomino wheeled away from the officers, ignoring their commands. As the officers followed, Palomino turned and pointed his weapon at one of them, whereupon the suspect was shot with an Agency-issued AR-15. Although aid was provided to Palomino and he was transported to an area hospital, he was later declared deceased. Furthermore, the weapon in his possession was revealed to be a BB-firing replica Glock. Prima facie, this is an ugly case, and that's partly why I chose it to discuss. "Cop shoots handicapped BB gun guy" is invariably going to get bandied about, but the logic in this situation is actually fairly clear. The officer had no way of knowing whether the weapon in question was real or not, and Palomino's being in a wheelchair has zero bearing on whether he could pull the trigger. It's unrealistic and unfair to expect an officer to act on more information than he has; and in this case the total is "the suspect is pointing a handgun at me." It may weigh on his conscience, or the court of public opinion might try to force it to, but the cop made the only choice he could in an awful situation.

This compilation of dashcam and bodycam footage shows Elk Grove Police Officers in California responding to an armed and threatening person outside a local fast food restaurant. As the suspect flees, he briefly points a revolver at the officers, which escalates the incident to deadly force. While no one is ultimately killed, viewer discretion remains advised. According to the 911 call placed, the suspect (later identified as Jerry Tolliver, 50 years of age) was seen and overheard harassing juvenile restaurant patrons and acting strangely. The 911 caller also claimed to see the grip of a handgun protruding from Tolliver's pocket. In order to prevent Tolliver from entering the restaurant with his weapon, the officers pick their moment to separate him from the front door. Tolliver attempts to flee, and in so doing draws and points a snub-nosed .38 caliber revolver at the officers. Simultaneously, they fire and release a K9 to take down Tolliver. Unsurprisingly, the bullets get there before the K9. Tolliver is in serious condition but expected to survive. Upon release from the hospital he will be taken into police custody for one count each of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and felon possessing a firearm.

This compilation of police bodycam and dashcam footage comes in from Newport Beach, California. In the video, we see the ramifications of a motorcyclist's cascading poor decisions as the situation escalates from a simple traffic stop to lethal force. Viewer discretion is advised. A Newport Beach police officer observed Geoffrey Stirling, 43 years of age, as he ran a red light on his motorcycle. The officer pursued and pulled Stirling over, at which point Stirling became noncompliant. He refused several commands to sit down on the curb and instead closed distance with the officer. He then physically attacked the officer, and in the struggle struck him twice in the head before taking his TASER. The officer ordered Stirling to drop the TASER, but when Stirling refused to do so, he was shot several times. Backup arrived and provided medical aid until EMS could take over, but Stirling eventually died at an area hospital. A non-sworn police department employee who was on a ride-along witnessed the event from the police car. Prima facie, it may seem unfair for the cop to use lethal force on a suspect holding a less-than-lethal weapon. However, the legal view on this matter is that if the suspect were to use that TASER on the officer and incapacitate him, all of the tools the officer had, including his handgun and ammunition, would then become available to the suspect. The risk of the suspect hurting the cop, themselves, or others with captured police weaponry (or even vehicles), is considered not to be borne.

This compilation of drone and bodycam footage shows Steuben County Sheriff's Department in New York taking down an armed suspect as he rams a law enforcement SUV. Viewer discretion is advised. 50-year-old Allen Hoad fired a shotgun at the Sheriff's deputies before entering a nearby home. After a short, failed attempt at negotiation, he left the building as shown while still in possession of a long gun, and backed his truck into one of the SUVs providing cordon. At this point, the Sheriff's Office personnel formed a line abreast on the passenger side and took Hoad under fire, shooting him as he tried to exit the truck from the driver's side. It's worth noting the other two officers in the top right of the drone footage, who wisely stay out of the way for crossfire considerations. Hoad was pronounced dead at an area hospital and a shotgun was found in the truck.

This harrowing footage shows the grim reality of a lethal force incident in Houston, Texas. The suspect grapples with an officer and discharges his duty weapon while trying to take it, prompting the officer's backup to shoot him. Viewer discretion is advised. The Houston police department responded to a reported burglary of a vehicle, which stated that the suspect could be armed with a knife or other sharp implement. The suspect evaded initial contact, resulting in a short foot chase. The video here picks up from Ofc. Avila as he arrives to see Ofc. Zhu wrestle the suspect to the ground. While entangled, the suspect grabs Ofc. Zhu's weapon and partially draws it, resulting in a gunshot at 0:12. As quickly as he can in a very tense situation, Avila tries to ensure as clear a shot as possible before shooting the suspect twice. The suspect is hit once in the body and once in the head. Gore spatters all over Ofc. Zhu. The suspect maintains their crouched position, but their last, snoring breath is audible. As the officers disentangle the suspect from Ofc. Zhu, Avila shows immediate and total concern for Zhu, for whom this call has been traumatic in several ways. 01:25 shows the event from his perspective. Houston Fire declared the suspect dead on-scene, and no officers or other persons were injured.

This bodycam footage, coming from Bridgeport, Connecticut, shows two officers making contact with persons of interest regarding complaints of a brawl at a funeral and possession of weapons. As one suspect flees, he draws a handgun and is shot. Viewer discretion is advised. Dyshan Best, 38 years of age, is shown fleeing from the Bridgeport Police as soon as it becomes apparent that he will be patted down, and in the ensuing foot chase, he is observed drawing a handgun (identified as a HiPoint Compact). Officer Yoon Heo immediately fires twice, dropping Best. Although aid was rendered on-scene, Best was pronounced dead after transfer to an area hospital. No other persons were harmed as result of these actions.

This dashcam footage shows a suspect using his two-year-old-daughter as a human shield while in a gunfight. This occurred in Franklin County, Indiana, two days before Christmas. Although the footage here has been sanitized, and the child did escape unscathed, the subject matter requires viewer discretion. Former Greenhills, Ohio cop Gregory Cameron Guilfoyle shot his wife in the head on the night of 23 December, 2022, picked up his daughter- at the time just 23 months old and only wearing a onesie- and left on foot. He was spotted walking with the girl in the incredibly hazardous weather (I pulled the weather report for that day and the high for that day was 1 degree Fahrenheit). When a Franklin County Deputy attempted to stop Guilfoyle, the suspect shot him while using his daughter as a human shield. Fortunately, the badass in question soaked it in his body armor and absolutely drilled him anyway, leaving the baby untouched and Guilfoyle to feel the Arctic air from the inside. It is difficult to hear her cries in such an awful situation, but they are like music compared to the frozen, quiet death she'd have suffered if this officer was not at the top of his game. I typically only name police officers in these videos if they've screwed up in a major way, or if they've gone above and beyond. Let me be perfectly clear: as far as I'm concerned, for his actions here, Franklin County Deputy Arin Bowers is a straight-up hero. Gregory Guilfoyle would survive being shot and received 100 years in prison for charges including two counts of attempted murder. Using PTSD from his time as a police officer in nearby Ohio as his defense did not appear to merit him much sympathy. He was sentenced on 12 May, 2025. Upon searching his home incident to the arrest shown here, Hannah Guilfoyle was found alive. She recovered after weeks in critical condition, but will continue to have medical complications. Unfortunately, the incident caused her to lose an unborn child.

This video, provided by the New Haven, Connecticut Violent Crime Task Force, shows their officers shooting a robbery suspect as their attempt to apprehend him goes badly awry. Viewer discretion is advised. Attempting to execute a warrant for the arrest of robbery suspect Jebrell Conley, the Task Force officers blocked his car in at an area car wash. As the officers close in to pull Conley from the car (check out the casual expertise with the stop-stick), two things happen in frighteningly close order: one of the officers manages to drop his weapon as Conley fires one round before his weapon jams. Imagine literally fumbling so badly that God immediately has to intervene. Conley isn't as fortunate, as he is shot several times by multiple officers. Despite medical aid being rendered on-scene, Conley was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The officer who dropped his gun is likely never going to live that down, but at least he gets to live long enough to be embarrassed.

This footage from Plano, Illinois shows the pursuit following the response to a 911. 70-year-old Russell Novak reported that he'd been shot, whereupon Kendall County Sheriff's Deputies encountered the suspect leaving Novak's house. During the subsequent chase, medical was dispatched but Mr. Novak was declared dead on-scene. The suspect, later confirmed as Mr. Novak's 36-year-old son, stops the vehicle and exits, shouldering a shotgun and firing before getting dropped by law enforcement officers who were in pursuit. No responding officers or other persons were injured, and despite aid rendered on-scene and at an area hospital, the suspect was declared deceased.

This footage is a compilation of the 911 call, security camera, and bodycam footage which cover the active shooter incident which occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada on 16 May 2025. This counters the only available footage publicly available heretofore, which did not show the shooter's weapon. Although the shooter's actions are omitted from the video and the graphic nature of his being shot is censored, due to the subject matter, viewer discretion is advised. Daniel Ortega, 34 years of age, entered the Las Vegas Athletic club, whereupon he fired 24 rounds before encountering a malfunction. His two dozen shots wounded two people and killed a third. The murdered victim was identified as Edgar Quinonez, 31, with whom the police have discovered no connection to Ortega. The 911 call recording records Ortega's gunshots. Once his weapon malfunctioned, he began pacing in the lobby of the fitness center, as shown in the security camera feed. He throws his car keys and wallet on the floor. From his lack of ability to assess and correct his rifle's condition, we can infer a lack of substantial training, and from throwing his identification and keys on the ground, a sense that he's aware of his fate. What follows thereafter is a compilation of several bodycam angles from the officers responding, including a slowed portion of the clip most clearly showing Ortega being taken down. He died at a nearby hospital. No other bystanders or officers were injured or killed.

This juxtaposed bodycam footage shows two Indianapolis Metro police officers rushing an apartment to take down an active shooter turned hostage taker. Viewer discretion is advised. Multiple 911 calls came in regarding shots fired, stemming from a domestic dispute between the suspect, 45-year-old Elijah Radford and two victims, whom he knew. Responding officers found two women, one of whom suffered a gunshot wound while the other had received bites and other injuries. Witnesses reported that Radford had attempted to execute one of them, but fled when his weapon malfunctioned. Meanwhile, the officers shown here were chasing Radford. The suspect crashed his truck at an apartment complex and forced his way into one of the apartments, taking the resident hostage at knife-point. Wasting no time, the officers in pursuit entered the building, whereupon one of them dropped Radford before he could harm the hostage.

This footage from Jacksonville, Florida captures a recent incident wherein a suspect draws a firearm while running from the police, and gets shot for his trouble. Viewer discretion is advised. As is the case with these things, the devil is in the details. The suspect shown, 18-year-old Cerry Banks allegedly texted a 13-year-old girl, unaware that the girl's mother had intercepted the phone. Upon attempting to meet up with the girl, Banks instead found the mother, whom he allegedly threatened with a firearm in his waistband. It is at this point we catch up to the story. Pursuant to an aggravated assault call, Jacksonville PD's Officer Robinson makes contact with Banks, at which point Banks flees. During the ensuing chase, the suspect draws his handgun, at which point Robinson shoots him. Warning: During this sequence of events, Officer Robinson does some of the most disappointingly lame stuff I've ever covered, including onomatopoeic gunfire noises, managing to trip over a fence that's already down, and saying... ugh... "As you were" over the radio. The video then picks up from a second officer's perspective as he coaches Banks out of hiding in a nearby drainage ditch, managing to be professional, yet apathetic to the gunshot Banks brought upon himself. Although the suspect survives, he is charged with (2x) Lewd and Lascivious with a minor, (2x) Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, as well as Travelling to Meet a Minor and Unlawful Use of a Communication Device.

This footage, coming from Fairfax County, Virginia, shows one of their officers making a traffic stop. The driver, who is armed, makes irate statements about the Taliban and serving in the GWOT alongside US Special Forces. He becomes increasingly agitated before the situation devolves into a gunfight, with the suspect apparently recording himself. Viewer discretion is advised. Jamal Wali, 36 years of age, is shown here being pulled over for having an expired inspection sticker. Upon making contact, Wali warns the officer that he is armed. He is seen ranting about supposedly serving with US Special Forces before being moved to the US with his family, and becoming increasingly irate. He makes furtive reaches for the weapon, but the officer keeps his cool and calls for backup. Wali pretends to acquiesce in the face of superior firepower, offering the officer his identification. Unfortunately, this is a ruse. As the officer leans in to take the card, Wali draws his pistol. Although the officer tries to grab it, Wali manages to get a single shot off before a malfunction occurs. Unfortunately, the shot passes through the contact officer's arm and into the arm of another officer behind him, before hitting a nearby car. A cover officer on the passenger side of the vehicle fires four times in response, striking Wali. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital, and the two wounded officers retrieved medical aid. They are expected to recover.

This bodycam/dashcam footage from Jacksonville, Florida shows a police officer's response to a suspect using scissors as a stabbing implement. While the incident is not explicitly graphic, due to the racially perjorative language used by the suspect, viewer discretion is advised. On 04 May 2025, a 911 call came in from the suspect's girlfriend. A week prior, Michael Wright, 40 years of age, had been detained and taken to the hospital for a possible narcotic overdose. In the interim, his girlfriend decided to remove her belongings from his home. Wright allegedly took aggressive exception to this. The 911 call was a request for protection. Jacksonville Police Ofc. Burke responded,and as he arrived, Wright jumped up to stab the hood of his cruiser with scissors clenched in his fist. Burke then tried to strike Wright with the bumper of his car, after which Wright punched the driver's window. Burke backed up and went for another bumper thump, succeeding on the second try. Wright went sprawling. Burke apparently tried to use Wright's position of disadvantage to get out of his cruiser, but Wright sprang up quickly. Wright dropped the scissors before charging Burke, but it would appear that in this rapid, high-adrenaline chain of events, the officer did not clearly see this. According to the report, the object shown in Wright's hand is actually his sunglasses. Wright was shot four times and later died at hospital, despite aid rendered on-scene. About The Author

This compilation of bodycam and dashboard camera footage shows DeSoto County Sheriff's Officers attempting to arrest a wanted sex offender. The situation escalates into a gunfight, wherein an officer is hit and the suspect is killed. Viewer discretion is advised. Law enforcement in Forsyth County, Georgia informed DeSoto County, Florida, to be on the lookout (BOLO) for Matthew Rollie, 30 years of age. He had an active warrant for enticing a child and failing to register as a sex offender. Accordingly, DeSoto Sherriff's Office located a vehicle suspected of being used by Rollie. Using the running of a stop sign as a pretext for stopping the vehicle, DeSoto Deputy Trujillo made contact with the driver and confirmed that Rollie was riding in the passenger side. As his partner Sgt. Nunez was checking Rollie's identification, Trujillo (on the driver's side) noticed Rollie reaching for a weapon (01:33), but not quickly enough to prevent the suspect from firing. He fired four times and Trujillo went down, returning fire. Despite being shot twice, Trujillo rather amazingly rolled right back up onto his feet. Sgt. Nunez fired on Rollie as he attempted to exit the vehicle on the passenger side. As he fell, Rollie continued to fire. At that point, Sgt. neutralized Rollie on the ground. Right at the 02:00 mark, we see the incident from Sgt. Nunez' perspective. 03:19 shows it from Trujillo's. From here, we can see the female driver of the car exited to the rear left of the vehicle, where she was out of the line of fire. Rollie was pronounced dead on-scene, whereas Trujillo was air-evacuated to an area hospital. He has since been discharged to recover at home. No other persons were harmed.

This compilation of bodycam and security camera footage captures a shootout between a Jacksonville, Florida Sheriff's Officer and a suspect. Viewer discretion is advised. On 12 March 2025, the suspect, Brandon White (33 years of age) refused to stop when interdicted by JSO Officer Goulding. White slowly continued to drive, passing safe places to stop in order to get to the location shown in the video. When White finally stopped, Goulding exited his vehicle to make contact. This is where the gunfight starts. In the almost immediate exchange of gunfire, Ofc. Goulding is hit in the foot. Despite this, he remains calm and transitions to cover, having run his weapon to lockback. His radio transmissions are clear and calm as he repositions and reloads- again, it bears mentioning that this is while having been shot. Using a fence to shoot in an almost textbook right-side barricade stance, at 0:28, Goulding takes follow-up shots at White, which are the ones that ultimately incapacitate the suspect. Ofc. Goulding then retreats, warning bystanders in the area to stay back. Humorously, the man has just been wounded in a gunfight but it's the rubberneckers that finally make him lose his cool at 01: 09. I think we can all relate. Goulding continues to look for the suspect until backup rescues him, not knowing that White is bleeding out in his car. Security camera footage from the house, cross-dubbed with the audio from Goulding's bodycam, gives us a frame of reference for what Goulding could not clearly see. Furthermore, it shows White in positive control of the long gun. White was transported to an area hospital but succumbed to his wounds, whereupon it was discovered that he was wearing body armor. Other than Ofc. Goulding's fantastic work and presence of mind under pressure, this video serves as a reminder that gear alone doesn't determine who wins. White had a premeditated plan, body armor and a rifle, and he still got outperformed by a cop with a sidearm. To paraphrase Voltaire, God is on the side of whoever shoots better.

This dashcam and bodycam compilation, coming from Ocala, Florida, shows police officers in pursuit of a black pickup. Inside are three persons suspected of knocking over the local TD bank earlier in the day on 08 May 2025. The truck rolls over in the course of the chase, and one of the suspects emerges with a weapon-in hand. Failing to drop his weapon, he is shot by law enforcement. Viewer discretion is advised. The suspect shown here, who attempts to flee on foot after the truck rolls, is identified as Randall Williford, 37 years of age. Along with Amanda Bishop, 34, and Andre Baker, 36, he robbed the TD Bank in Ocala of $6900. Bishop acted as the getaway driver, fleeing at nearly 90 miles per hour. When the truck flips as result of these excessive speeds, Bishop and Baker remain inside while Williford tries to run. In his escape, Williford trips and regains his feet while still holding his weapon. This slowdown allows the police to close distance with Williford and repeatedly demand he drop his weapon. Because he fails to do so, he is shot. However, the gunshot to his wrist is promptly treated with a tourniquet. Williford was transported to an area hospital, with a promising expectation of recovery. Williford was charged with armed robbery, possessing a firearm as a felon, aggravated assault on an officer, and tampering with evidence. The driver, Amanda Bishop, was charged with armed robbery and fleeing or eluding with disregard for safety. Andre Baker was charged with armed robbery.
