Malian militants receive aid from Libya
Azawad militants in Mali receive a supply convoy from Libya. Since the fall of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has struggled to establish a functioning government, and conflict between warring factions has resulted in instability and an inability of the central government to guarantee security. External actors have taken advantage of the lawlessness in Libya to use the country as a staging ground to support factions in regional conflicts. Much of the aid funneled by UAE to RSF rebels in Sudan flows through Libya, and the RSF often retreats to the Libyan desert to regroup and resupply. Similar support is given to Azawad militants in Mali, who are at odds with the government, the Russian Africa Corps supporting the government, and with the Islamic militants plaguing the Sahel.

The Emirates have long funneled cash and weapons to the RSF via Libya, and for some time there has been evidence UAE-funded Colombian mercenaries supporting RSF operations, but this is the first footage of full combat between mercenaries and government forces.

Militiamen fighting alongside the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) pose alongside a burning armored personnel carrier. The vehicle is a NIMR Ajban 440A, a wheeled armored personnel carrier produced in the UAE and provided to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The SAF and RSF have waged a brutal civil war for several years, which has since evolved into a proxy war between regional and national powers. The UAE has been a stanch, though clandestine support of the RSF, providing weapons and funding and a marketplace for smuggled goods and resources, while Russia has also deployed Wagner Group and Africa Corps troops in support of the RSF. On the other side, the SAF is supported by Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Eritrea, and some sources indicate that Ukraine has sent operatives and drones to thwart Russian interests. The result is ongoing violence and an RSF that refuses to die. They currently seef to secure territorial gains in Darfur and have declared a parallel government to the one in Khartoum. Even if they suffer serious setbacks, the RSF will retreat into Syria and await support, which UAE will grant in hope of a negotiated settlement that will grant them influence in the region.

RSF forces are besieging the city, and officials from the United Nations have stated that if it falls, the RSF and Janjaweed militants will, in all likelihood, actively pursue acts of genocide. However, you wouldn't know the stakes are that dire by looking at our intrepid cameraman. He's grinning ear-to-ear as he takes selfies with a pair of Toyota technicals. They're armed with machine guns and an MLRS, respectively. The 'Thon Is On and our guy is loving it. As a Sergeant of mine once said, "if you can't get out of it, get into it!"

A combined force of Somlai federal troops and Ugandan soldiers with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) seize the strategic town of Bariire from Al Shabaab militants. The allied forces employed armor, including tanks, as well as drones. The town served as a command and control and logistic node for Al Shabaab, and its loss is a setback to the jihadists and their goal to encircle the Somali capital of Mogadishu. Over 100 militants were killed in the operation, with many others captured, along with stockpiles of supplies and weapons.

A compilation of clips from May 6 documenting Islamic militants attacking and seizing a military outpost in Burkina Faso. Fighters from the al-Qaeda-affiliated group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), mounted on motorcycles and equipped with small arms, attacked a compound in north-western Burkina Faso, killing several soldiers and seizing military weapons and vehicles. Though shaky and possibly not in chronological order, we see militants attacking the enclosure on foot, before burning and pillaging the compound. According to the source, witnesses described the attack as organized, with dozens of militants suddenly storming the outpost and overwhelming the defenders. Items seized include four military vehicles, two DShK heavy machine guns, a mortar, seven RPG launchers, eight PK machine guns, and 34 Kalashnikov rifles, as well as uniforms, boots, ammunition, and magazines.

ootage from this February past showing instructors from Russia’s Africa Corps (formerly the Wagner Group) training Malian militiamen in basic in infantry combat drills. The fighters are members of The Imghad Tuareg Self-Defense Group and Allies (GATIA), an ethnic Tuareg militia in Azawad, Mali. Gatia has pledged support for the Malian government and opposes both ISIS and other anti-government militias. Despite fearsome losses in Ukraine, Russia continues to commit personnel and resources to building influence in Africa. Members of Russia’s Africa Corps are involved in conflicts in countries across the continent, including Mali, Sudan, Central African Republic, and Niger. In exchange for security assistance, the Russian government gains access to resources, including timber, gold, diamonds, rare earth metals, and other precious minerals. Recently, the government in Niger declared Russia its greatest strategic partner, granted Russia the use of military installations, and granted the Kremlin access to 5% of the world’s uranium supply. Furthermore, Africa has turned into a source for recruits for a Russian Army that is bleeding to death in Ukraine.

Footage from January showing the latest ISIS affiliate, Lakurawa, which is wreaking havoc in West Africa, largely in Niger and Mali. Last year, Lakurawa was just another small jihadist group in Niger pledging loyalty to ISIS and doing rather terrible things but on a smaller scale. After the military coup in Niger, many tribes which had previously been unaffiliated decided to join Lakurawa’s ranks, giving the group substantial momentum. The army in Niger was able to launch a successful operation against the group around the time of this video, presumably killing its leader, but the organization has rebounded and continues to spread chaos.

A man purported to be a Colombian mercenary serving alongside Rapid Support Force (RSF) fighters in Sudan. Sources allege that a Colombian mercenary, though not necessarily this man, was killed yesterday during a failed RSF attack near the town of Al-Fasher. Sources indicate that recruiting companies with ties to UAE, a supporter of the RSF, have used promises of security contracts in Africa and the Middle East to lure Colombian veterans into participating in the war in Sudan. Driven by a wavering Colombian economy, these men are funneled into Sudan through Chad, Libya, and Somalia, where they serve alongside the RSF for $2,600–3,400 per month.

The activities were previously handled by Wagner Group, a Private Military Contractor, but after an attempted coup, the organization was de-privatized, its founder assassinated, and its assets placed under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Re-branded “Africa Corps,” the group has been operating cooperatively with Malian government forces. The militants that conducted this attack are likely a tribal group but may be affiliated with Al Qaeda.

The Somali government is currently in crisis, as Al Shabaab militants have the federal army on its heels and are attempting to encircle the captial of Mogadishu. Al Shabaab’s success has been due, in part, to rifts between the federal administration and several regional governments, which have prevented the implementation of a coherent strategy to counter the extremists. UAE’s decision to deliver aid to Puntland and not the federal government is deliberate, part of a strategy to establish a presence and build military infrastructure by partnering with local polities more willing to compromise than central government in Mogadishu. The results are beneficial to the people of Puntland, but detrimenatal to creation of a unified and functional Somali state.

Footage recorded in April of this year shows combat operations occurring near the Russian Africa Corps Base located at Sévaré Airport in Mali. The event, which occurred on April 25, 2026, shows members of Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin, the al-Qaeda affiliate in the Sahel, launching coordinated attacks across Mali alongside its new tactical ally, the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front, who are better known as the FLA. These strikes targeted Malian military and Russian Africa Corps positions in multiple locations, including the capital Bamako area, Gao, Kidal in the north, and crucially the central region around Mopti and Sévaré. Malian army statements, issued via the General Staff, confirmed clashes with “unidentified armed terrorist groups” in Sévaré and other sites, while framing the overall events as a thwarted coup attempt. JNIM claimed responsibility for strikes in Mopti, Sévaré, and elsewhere, later releasing its own propaganda video of the Sévaré operation, which can be seen above. The Sévaré assault specifically targeted the strategic Malian army base and adjacent Sévaré/Mopti Airport facilities, which host key air assets, a major central Mali military hub, and Russian Africa Corps personnel/barracks. JNIM fighters conducted a ground assault supported by drones, dropping explosives on positions inside the base, targeting aircraft, helicopters, and personnel. Social media and later JNIM-released footage show multiple drone strikes on Malian and Russian Africa Corps assets at the Mopti Airport and Sévaré site, with militants advancing and reportedly overrunning or infiltrating parts of the outpost.

Having personally seen a few IED strikes against unarmored pickup trucks of this type, it's highly unlikely that anyone walked out of this attack without, at the very least, serious injuries.
