Tuareg militants fire rockets at government troops
Tuareg militants in northeastern Mali fire on government troops near the city of Kidal. Mali has struggled to counter Islamic groups such as ISIS and various Al Qaeda affiliates, which have attempted to sever the pipeline of fuel to the capital. In response, the regime has engaged in a rapid military buildup and relies heavily on Russian Africa Corps troops for training and convoy escorts. The Malian government is also forced to contend with tribal separatists in the mountains. The Tuaregs, who practice a form of Islam, do not particularly like the Islamists, and have their own issues repelling incursions from ISIS groups. Much of the Tuareg kit is obtained from slain ISIS fighters, who likely obtained their kit from government troops or from arms bazars in Libya. Mali has adopted an interesting form of equal opportunity, where pretty much anyone can find an enemy to fight.

An encampment of the militant Islamist group JNIM was discovered by government forces in Burkina Faso. According to the source for this video, the military then bombed the jihadist base with drones and an A29 Super Tucano, a modern turboprop aircraft made by the Brazilian company Embraer. The Burkina Faso armed forces then launched an air assault with special forces. The booty captured included weapons, tools, phones, radios, and motorcycles. Much of which was destroyed. It makes sense that the motorcycles were burned, as they can not be dragged away on a helo and provide JNIM with the mobility required to conduct raids and interdict lines of communication. It is interesting that the commandos also captured and destroyed tools, which are necessary to keep the bikes running. For everyone who has ever lost a 10mm socket, now you know where it is.

This footage, recorded by a Sudanese militiaman who makes sure we see him, shows RSF infantry being routed by pro-military technicals in Kordofan. As the RSF fighters flee on foot, they are gunned down by the trucks' machine gunners. It's all done in a manner not dissimilar to how people sometimes hunt wild hogs in the US. However, RSF has been known to engage in war crimes, crimes against humanity and outright genocide, according to sources which include BBC and Amnesty International, so very few Sudanese people, if any, are likely to have much sympathy.

Cell phone footage published by soldiers with the Nigerian Army shows a convoy of technical vehicles reacting to contact with a group of Boko Haram fighters. According to the source, the ambush was a total failure as the Nigerian troops had access to heavy weapons which enabled them to gain and maintain fire superiority against the ambushing Boko Haram fighters.

A fighter bomber of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) strikes rebel RSF positions at the airport in the town of Nyala. The SAF is predominantly comprised of members of Sadan’s former air force, while the RSF generally served as Sudan’s infantry arm prior to the current civil war. The two sides were unable to enact a power sharing arrangement which would have absorbed the RSF fully into the Sudanese military, thus spawning the current conflict. The SAF has a small array of Soviet-produced aircraft, including eleven MiG-29s like the one shown in the footage. The RSF has resorted to drones for air power, and has purportedly been supplied with Chinese air defense systems by the UAE.

Militant separatists of the FLA, or Azawad Liberation Front, recently seized the settlement of Koniba. The FLA is just one of several headaches for the regime in Bamako, which is also battling Islamist groups linked to ISIS and Al Qaeda. The Malian government receives aid from Russia though it is often playing whack-a-mole in the country’s periphery, swinging at threats that emerge, cause havoc, and then recede into the wilderness. If there is one advantage that the government can leverage, it is that their enemies do not share common interests. The FLA has no love for the Islamists, and the Islamists occasionally trade shots with each other.

The facility is fortified by Hesco surrounding a compound with a few crude structures. Damaged or destroyed military vehicles can be seen littering the compound. The raiders moved in on motorcycles, and the absence of military casualties or prisoners makes me wonder if the soldiers merely left when the militants arrived. Like other countries in the Sahel, Burkina Faso has been plagued by Islamists bands seeking to erode public trust in the government’s ability to maintain security. The country is engaged in substantial efforts to build its military and is courting foreign allies, such as Russia.

Their operational methods appear effective and create significant problems for the nations of the Sahel, though JNIM lacks the panache of the Toecutter, and none of militants are riding anything as sweet as a 1978 Kawasaki KZ-1000.

Recent attacks have focused on the Bamako to Segou road and the Bamako to Sikasso road, the latter of which connects Mali to its neighbor and strategic partner, Burkina Faso. These attacks are seen as an attempted blockade, severing the capital from regional centers and trade partners. In response, the Malian government has taken an approach that is far more aggressive than past western-led counterinsurgency efforts. Their current approach includes raids, targeted drone strikes of militant and separatist leaders, and the detention of those with ties to militants or separatists.

Military reinforcements, including tanks on flatbed trucks, of the Government of National Unity (GNU) head to the Libyan capital of Tripoli to confront militia members of the RADA Special Deterrence Forces. RADA participated in the 2011 uprising which ousted longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi, and now exists as a radical Islamist special operations police force which tackles high profile crime. Consisting of about 1,500 members, RADA is the third or fourth largest militia in Tripoli and controls key locations, such as Mitiga Airport. A deadline for RADA to stand down and to cede control to forces loyal to the GNU has come and gone, resulting in both sides calling reinforcements to Tripoli. Bloodshed in the capital is imminent.
